Info for wiki-ers

For meta about the glowfic wiki, including the opt-in list.

Author Opt Ins

This is a list of authors who've opted in to having their content included on the wiki, who have declined to have their content included, or who have more complicated preferences than a flat "opt in / opt out". Each author's own words are in the last column and are what count; the other columns summarise them, and say unconfirmed until the author has checked them. When you edit a page about an author's characters or threads, the editor shows their preferences here as a reminder.

To add yourself or change your entry, edit this page (see Template:Author opt-in for the fields).

Conventions

This is a collection of pages on conventions about organizing the wiki. These are subject to change, of course, and they're not absolutes - content can be organized other ways.

Conventions

General Conventions

This is a list of conventions about organizing the wiki. These are subject to change, of course, and they're not absolutes - content can be organized other ways.

Tagging

Most content should ideally be tagged. The emerging convention is for the tag to be a category, e.g. "author", and the tag value to be a specific instance of that category, e.g. "Alicorn". Authors, continuities, settings, and threads should be tagged with the authors involved. Everything can have multiple tags, including multiple tags from the same category.

Some tags have specific pages on them, listing conventions and some common values. These are also in the 'Conventions' chapter.

A list of all top-level tags currently being used is here, though note it doesn't currently give values used for those tags. (And of course some of these might be mis-tags or typos at any given moment.)

Important note: Tags applied to a continuity should be usually applied to the top-level book for the continuity, not its subpages, so that what comes up when people search the tag is the continuity name. We don't want the search results for relationship=het to be twelve different pages all named "Reference"!

Suggested tags include:

Author Shelf

The convention for Authors is for each Author to have their own book. An Author may or may not have category-less pages like 'About X'. Common Author chapters are templates, with instances as alts within that template. ('Minor Characters' should probably be its own chapter). Other suggested Author chapters and category-less pages:

Note that page content can be mirrored between pages (https://www.bookstackapp.com/docs/user/reusing-page-content/). Typically, things like "threads" and "settings" go on other shelves, but major examples could reasonably be mirrored (with the base example in the proper shelf).

Information about a template as a whole, such as history, clusters, and attractors, can go in a "About (Template)" page within the template's chapter. One can also add a short (2-3 items) list of good introductory reading material for that template, suitable for getting to know what the template is like.

Continuity Shelf

The convention for Continuities and threads is for each major Continuity to have its own book, with subcontinuities in chapters and notable threads as pages. Subcontinuities might also have a summary page, a notable characters page, a related reading page, etc. We have not figured out a set convention for notable Sandboxes yet.

Settings Shelf

Generally, setting base pages should go over here, not in Author books, given that many settings have multiple authors involved. Fandom settings should get their own Book for the original fandom, with different takes (and common setting facts) in chapters. Settings or takes can be tagged with the involved authors.

It's suggested for minor original settings to go in the "Original Settings" book, possibly with chapters by author for simple solo settings (e.g. "Kappa's Settings (Chapter)") and a page for each setting. Individual original settings that are more complicated than a single page, but not as complicated as a full book, can also have their own chapters. Simple collaborative settings can go in a "Collaborative Settings" chapter if the authors wish.

Conventions

Tags: character-trait

This is a list of conventions specific to the character-trait tag, including a list of in-use or suggested values. These tags should ONLY be used when tagging templates or characters. This page is a WIP.

In general, if a template is tagged with a trait, then characters within that template do not need to be also tagged with the trait (for example, Bells are tagged as worldfixing, so Demon Cams don't need also be tagged as that).

When adding values, please also link the search for that specific value.

Conventions

Tags: genre

This is a list of conventions specific to the genre tag, including a list of in-use or suggested values. Most instance of genre should be attached to stories; see character-trait and setting-trait for categorization tags for characters and settings respectively. Many book genres like 'science fiction' are currently categorized as setting-traits.

When adding values, please also link the search for that specific value.

Tags: relationship

This is a list of conventions specific to the relationship tag, including a list of in-use or suggested values. The value of a 'relationship' tag can be either a specific relationship or a 'relationship type' (e.g. 'femslash) that's notably present.

Note: whether a thread/ continuity/ etc is romance-centric or gen should be tagged under genre.

When adding values, please also link the search for that specific value.

Main Page

The Glowfic Wiki is a reference for glowfic, the collaborative fiction written post by post on glowfic.com. It collects the continuities, settings, characters and authors behind the threads, so you can find out who someone is, catch up on how a setting works, or see where a story fits.

Anyone in the community can help. New to editing? Start with the editing conventions, and check the author opt-in list before writing about someone else's characters.

Main Page/Featured

Effulgence characters — 389 character pages from the old Effulgence Fandom wiki now live here, along with the Effulgence and Incandescence world pages. Many are stubs: if you know a character, help fill them in.

Using templates and wikitext

This page explains the two ways to write pages on this wiki, how templates work, and how to pull live information from glowfic.com into a page. See also the editing conventions.

Choosing an editor

Every page can be written in one of two editors. You can switch at any time from the Editing Page menu at the top of the editor.

Switching converts the page; nothing is lost, though complicated formatting may come out slightly differently.

Wikitext basics

You type You get
italic italic
bold bold
== Heading == a section heading (also listed in the page's Contents)
Isabella Cullen Isabella Cullen
Golden Golden
glowfic glowfic
* item / # item a bulleted / numbered list
adds the page to Category:Witches (shown at the bottom of the page)
#REDIRECT Isabella Cullen (as the whole page) sends readers on to another page
Text. a footnote, listed at the end of the page

Title finds the page with that title anywhere on the wiki, or a book, chapter or shelf with that name. If several pages share a title, readers get a list to choose from; if a title matches character names (like Bella) the wiki lists those characters automatically. Links to pages that don't exist yet show in red — follow one to create the page.

Templates

A template is a reusable piece of a page, like an infobox. Templates live in the Templates book; each template's page shows its parameters, an example and where it's used. Use one by writing its name in double braces, with parameters separated by |:

Changing a template updates every page that uses it. To write your own, create a page in the Templates book and use {name} where a parameter goes ({default} for a default). Notes for other editors go on a page called Template name/doc.

Templates also work in the WYSIWYG editor: type the call (like Stub) as ordinary text and it is filled in when the page is shown. In WYSIWYG pages you can also include another page with (its id), and pass it parameters: fills {name} in the included page.

Live information from glowfic.com

These blocks fetch information from glowfic.com and refresh it daily. In the WYSIWYG editor, use the Glowfic button on the toolbar; in wikitext, type them directly.
