“The lake is surrounded by three things: the Milliways building itself, a huge forest, and a small mountain range off in the distance. The higher she goes, the more stubbornly indistinct these three features become. The forest seems to go on forever; the mountains refuse to let her peek over them; the building retreats into a concealing fog like a distant landmark in a video game.” - Stella flying above Milliways.

Milliways is the restaurant at the end of the universe.[1] It connects most of the worlds known in Effulgence, providing doors to "interesting people", in place of the door they expected, at whim. It has an infinite menu and is managed by a sentient bar known only as Bar who typically communicates by writing on drink napkins.

Appearance

Interior

Rough sketch of Milliways by Alicorn Besides the Bar and table area, Milliways has rooms upstairs that can be rented and rooms downstairs which belong to the cleaning, infirmary and security staff.[2] The seating area has a large window that overlooks the sky with exploding stars.[3]

Exterior

The outside has a lake, a forest, a moutain range and the bar itself, all of which are dimensional anomalies with no visible end no matter how far you go. In Effulgence, the Belltower is added later; it is currently occupied by Jane's physical form.

Hex is a world created by Alicorn and Aestrix for use in Incandescence. It was the first world to encounter the Plague of Utopias.

Society

Hex's technological level is roughly comparable to that of medieval or Regency era Earth. The story takes place in Marlatia, a monarchy currently ruled by Edarial Cartalian and Iobel Swan. Two other countries, Ethayr and Lathiland, have been mentioned in passing.

Inhabitants

Hex contains humans and, in some cases, their familiars. Its flora and fauna are otherwise Earthlike.

Magic

Humans born in Hex are born with insubstantial spirit animals. If they choose to bond to their spirit animal, it becomes a familiar and the human becomes a spellbinder. Unbound spirit animals simply fade away as their human ages.

Gemini is an Incandescence world. It was the fifth world to encounter the Plague of Utopias. In all ways other than the following, it can be considered identical to our Earth.

Superpowered Twins

In the fifties, twins started receiving superpowers when they turned sixteen. Superpowered soldiers and policemen are now relatively common; both supervillains and superheroes exist, but are much rarer, as they are generally considered nonviable careers. The United States has instituted mandatory Gemini Schools for high school age twins, which despite requiring monitoring and registration have so far proven non-dystopic.

Yellowstone

More recently, the supervolcano under Yellowstone erupted. Most of the Lava Creek Tuff was evacuated, and much of the rest of the world was swamped with refugees and operating in emergency mode. The chaos was mitigated by the arrival of the Plague of Utopias, which has been summoning angels and demons to provide emergency supplies and return the affected land to a habitable state.

History and traits

Inferno is characterized by a Earth-typical world with minor historical divergences, directly related to their magic (See below). However the current year is 2159 and since 2012 magic is publicly known.

Besides the typical plane of reality, Inferno has four different afterlives each with different traits.

Magic

Magic in Inferno is categorized in two types "parlor tricks" and Summoning/Daevas.

Ravel is one of the worlds of Incandescence. It would have been the seventh world to encounter the Plague of Utopias.

Society

Antaurb

Antaurb is one of the two known countries in Ravel. It is less well developed than Casasha, and for cultural reasons- namely, that it is difficult to pay people for results or skills instead of strictly their time- it makes less use of its magic users. Adarin and Zeviana Sorelas are from Antuarb.

Casasha

Main article: Casasha

Casasha is one of the two known countries in Ravel. It is nicer and better developed than Antuarb, and makes better use of its mages. Sharabel Swanpennon is currently the heir to the throne of Casasha.

Casasha is a monarch with a unusual succession system. The heir of the throne is chosen by the magical "Heir Crown", which will float if placed on the head of someone deemed worthy. To be worthy, a person has to have, at minimum, gone through a quest to save others for basically selfless reasons. The children of the current monarch get the first try; after that, people from the nobility, or "pennon" families, have a chance, and failing that commoners might have a shot.

Magic

Main article: Category:Raveler

Roughly 0.5% of the population of Ravel gains a magical specialty called in their teens. These magic users are known as "ravelers", though their abilities vary by specialty. There is no other known magic in Ravel.

Epilogue is one of the worlds of Incandescence. It is an original setting created by Aestrix.

Worlds

Epilogue is considered a worldsheaf. It contains multiple planes, though only two worlds are currently known to be inhabited.

Kystle

Main article: Kystle

Kystle was the original home of Epilogue's human population. After the Pythial invasion, its residents fled to New Kystle. Thanks to the hard work of Adarin Sorelas and Lynnari Corvalias, the plane has been reclaimed and resettled.

New Kystle

Main article: New Kystle

New Kystle was the temporary sanctuary of Kystle's population when they fled the Pythial invasion. With a lot of time and effort, mostly on the part of Adarin Sorelas, it has become much more habitable, and is now well-settled and stable.

Population

The majority of Epilogue's population is made up of baseline humans. The plane has been visited a few times by Fae, who interbred with humans, leaving a small population of mages. Kystle also contains the remnants of the Pythial demons summoned by second bloodline mages, and a small population of those they Tainted.

Magic

Main article: Category:Mage (Kystle)

Anyone descended from the Fae has the ability to do magic. The more Fae blood someone has, the more powerful they are. There are three bloodlines in existence; the first and second have become diluted and weakened and vie with each other for power, while the third consists only of the quarter-Fae twins Adarin and Zeviana Sorelas.

History

For history prior to the third bloodline, see Kystle.

Third Bloodline

The third halfblood was named Aliya Sorelas, and she was discovered before her birth. She was carefully raised by the second bloodline to be as stable as possible, until a man Nereus arranged for Veron Barkett to kidnap her. Rather than being traumatized by the kidnapping, Aliya was delighted by the freedom, the adventure, and above all with Nereus; she became infatuated with him, and wound up pregnant. At this point a rescue effort from the second bloodline appeared, killing Nereus in the process, which set Aliya on a rampage. Veron managed to talk her down, and he and the second bloodline declared a truce rather than risk upsetting her again. Aliya went home and gave birth to twins, Adarin and Zeviana, who were raised by a variety of disinterested second bloodline guardians until Veron intervened and took over their upbringing.

Invasion

Adarin and Zeviana flourished under Veron's care, but as they grew neither expressed any interest in bearing children. Dismayed by the twins' refusal to cooperate with their dynastic plans, the second bloodline went searching for more magic themselves. This led them to summon the Pythial, who promptly went on a murderous rampage. Adarin and Zeviana left home in the chaos to fight the invasion; during their absence the Pythial found Aliya, who promptly blew herself up, taking Veron and the entire city with her. Adarin held up a shield while Zeviana rounded up survivors; once Adarin's shield collapsed, the remaining mages evacuated all the refugees to New Kystle.

Reconstruction

tl;dr Prime fixed all the things and Lynn killed all the demons and Marri will get to this later.

Tech Level 1970s

Treasury is one of the worlds of Incandescence. It is the sixth world to encounter the Plague of Utopias.

Geography

Treasury is an Earth-like world, in which the continents, species, etc. are the same as Earth's. Treasury can therefore be assumed to contain Earth-equivalent countries, but other than the following, their names are presently unknown.

Noregr

The story takes place in Noregr, a country roughly equivalent to Earth's Norway. Aldaras Sarbror and Zevaia Sarbror are mentioned to have grown up in Seldalr with their father.[1]

Chung-Koet

Chung-Koet is implied to be a China-equivalent. Aldaras and Zevaia lived in a tiny mountain town called Ng Yen until they were eleven.[2]

Society

As an Earth-like world, Treasury's society and history has diverged enough and early enough from our Earth that there are many large-scale differences (mostly in place names). Though the tech level is about equal to Earth's 1970s, the calendar year in Treasury is 1802.

Magic

The only magic in Treasury is artifacts. People who have touched an artifact, known as "touched", gain both a beneficial ability and a negative side effect. Most known artifacts are currently in the possession of the University of Drofnfjord in Noregr.

Cycle is one of the worlds of Incandescence. It is an original world created by Alicorn and Aestrix, and is not based on Earth.

Geography

Cycle is split into three known locations; the main continent where the characters live, the Islands, and the Faraway. All share a common tongue, though with regional accents. On the main continent, Lapis is the city where Bells and Adarins have been congregating, as it has been recognizable in their dreams across reincarnations. Also mentioned are Niaham, original home of Sylvibel Mar, and Karsvatch, original home of Avedan.

Society

Babies & Storks

In Cycle, 'brought by the stork' is literal. People in Cycle do not get pregnant, or have menstrual cycles or navels. Parent and sibling relationships therefore don't exist as we know them, although romance and marriage does. Instead, babies occur naturally in random tucked-away places such as the crooks of trees. People previously collected them by hand (and they could just as easily die unfound), and it's customary in most places for infants to be raised by people who are publicly employed and for children of useful ages to be fobbed off into apprenticeships. Eventually Alymbel created a collection of stork-shaped servants which search likely places, pick up babies they find, and bring them to central locations. Animals reproduce normally but no one remembers humans ever doing such a thing. People do not have any strong tendency to look similar to other people nearby (rendering the concept of ethnic group nonsensical). Babies from Cycle can grow just fine on animal milk and other liquid nutrition until they grow teeth.

Reincarnation

Some nonzero quantity of Cycle residents reincarnate when they die. This is initially triggered by a death being witnessed by someone who desperately wants the dying soul to live, even under the condition that they never see the person again; all subsequent deaths of that same soul will reincarnate regardless of spectators. A new baby will appear with roughly altlike similarity to their predecessor at the time of the predecessor's death. Appearance (selected from among possible faces for the person-type), location, and traits that normally vary for the template may vary likewise between incarnations. Reincarnations are, apart from standard altlike resemblance, unconnected to their past lives until in their teens they start having dreams that are memories of their lives. These dreams appear in random order, may last for seconds or hours, occur in first-person perspective from the point of view of the past self, and, on waking, are as vivid as any normally retained memory that is as old as that memory in fact is would normally be (that is: more so if it is of an emotionally significant event, relatively recent, or both, and inconsistently so otherwise). They are more frequent and longer in duration over a given self's life.

Slavery

Slavery was originally much more common in Cycle. In present times it is far less prevalent, as Kidan dedicated his life to combating it. The practice has not been completely eradicated- at a minimum, some city-states in the Faraway use the practice as a punishment for criminals- but that it is at least now extremely uncommon.

This article is about the Incandescence world. For the local magic system, see Momentum (Magic).

Momentum is a non-Earth planet with one sapient species, humans.

Geography

Momentum has rings and four moons, and no flora or fauna that could not be found on Earth. Known countries include Tanree, Beraz, Ampar and Var. Residents of Tanree speak Reesh, which can also be found in Beraz and Ampar but is uncommon in Var. There are at least five other languages actively spoken.

Society

Momentum is a high-magic, low-science environment, as the nature of their magic makes it extremely difficult to attempt controlled scientific experiments of any scope. Conventional countries and cities exist, but also contain the territories of sorcerers, who exist outside the political structure. Society tries not to depend on permanent magical items, as these are bound to the momentum of their creator and may unexpectedly fail, but a dispatch system to call sorcerers for help is common at least in Tanree.
